You should be contacted by one of the chiefs regarding your schedule before your rotation.
Learn pediatric intensive care.
On your first day, you will report to the PICU on the 4th floor of the main hospital by 0600 sharp.
Sign out with the APP's and residents happens in the PICU conference room 4612, just outside the PICU main doors.
Patients will be assigned in the morning and split amongst the residents. You will also rotate new admissions.
The general daily structure in the PICU is as follows:
Arrive by 0600 every day
Weekday rounds (Mon-Fri) start at 0730 (with CT surgery/cardiology rounds)
Sign-out (afternoon rounds) starts at 1600 and the expectation is to stay until rounds are completed
Afternoon rounds are quick and serve as the hand-off from the day attending to night attending
When you are on night float (Tuesday night-Sunday morning or Thursday night-Tuesday morning, 5 nights consecutively), arrive by 1600
You will attend afternoon/sign-out rounds to receive sign out on all your patients
The NP sign out will occur at 1800, feel free to attend if you have specific questions not answered by attending sign out, however this is not required. After the NPs sign out, discuss with them how you plan to split coverage of the unit overnight
You are allowed to leave at 0630 the next morning (after sign out), assuming all of your documentation and overnight responsibilities are complete
You have two days off after your week of nights in order to allow you to switch back to a day schedule (Tuesday night-Sunday morning have Sunday and Monday off, and Thursday night-Tuesday morning have Tuesday and Wednesday off)
For one weekend (Saturday AND Sunday) during the month, you will come in at 0600 to pre-round. The expectation is that you will stay until at least 1700 unless dismissed earlier.
On the weekend, there is no patient cap. Because of this, you will not be expected to write progress notes on the weekend. Progress notes will be the attending’s responsibility.
You are not allowed vacation or conference time during your month
We have multiple educational conferences for the pediatric residents that you are encouraged to attend:
Noon conference Monday and Wednesday from 1230-1330
Grand Rounds Fridays at 0800 in the Considine Auditorium
While in the PICU, you will also have scheduled didactics that you will be informed about
A few notes about the schedule:
If your name is not listed on a weekend day it means you have the day off.
If it says “NP” it means there are no residents on-call that night.
If a name is red it just means that we made changes after our first initial draft for review by the departments.
Note Writing
Use SmartTexts to template your notes, all templates start with PICU.
Update the discharge summary for your patients as things happen.
Procedures: Procedures during the weekday are typically done by the fellow or APP. You should get procedures on the weekend and on nights.
